Bolt Burden provides cost effective and commercial legal advice in the fields of media and entertainment law. We typically work on a fixed fee (or capped fee) basis, as this suits the requirements of our clients. We are also used to working to very tight deadlines.
Clients we have advised include PLC’s concerning the protection of intellectual property rights, to some of the country’s highest profile musicians, events, film, recording and publishing companies, television personalities, media and advertising agencies, magazines and commercial enterprises. At the other end of the spectrum, we also represent and encourage new performing artists, producers and managers, and aim to be the first point of legal contact for all creative projects irrespective of their budget.
There are two partners handling Media and Entertainment; Chris Phillips and Mike Shepherd.
Chris Phillips – For music-related non-contentious legal matters
Clients include Tinie Tempah (Number one UK charts March 2010) and Juno Reactor (Composer – films include ‘Matrix Reloaded’).
Chris co-wrote Music Business Agreements (3rd edition), the legal textbook for other professionals working in the music business.

He is also a dual qualified lawyer (New York and England/Wales), having 14 years experience, specialising in music copyright and commercial transactions.
Chris’s work involves advising and negotiating all types of media and entertainment contracts for performing artists, composers and media companies. He has advised major international Oscar and Grammy-winning performers and composers, as well as young DJ’s, producers and bands starting out in the media and entertainment business.
Mike Shepherd – For contentious work (ie music–related disputes)
Mike acted for Matthew Fisher in the highly publicised case Fisher –v- Brooker in 2009 – in his claim for recognition of co-authorship to the song “A Whiter Shade of Pale”, which he won unanimously in the House of Lords. It was a landmark case in reassuring composers and creative individuals that their rights will be acknowledged and protected by our courts.
He is also a dual qualified lawyer (solicitor and New York Attorney) with 10 years media litigation experience gained at Jens Hills and Co before joining Bolt Burdon in June 2010, and has experience working in-house in the licensing department of Polygram Records (now Universal) (1998) and the business affairs department of NBD (leading video distribution company (1999)).
